Academic presentations in English are an essential requirement of academic life for non-native English-speaking academics. They may be required at an early stage of one's academic career when, for example, presenting pre-doctoral research in English or in the presentation and defence of one's PhD; at a later stage when giving post-doctoral presentations at international academic conferences; and also when firmly established as lecturers and professors at university where they are increasingly required to teach degree courses in English. English has now become the lingua franca of academic exchange which, combined with the increasingly diverse and international student composition at universities, has resulted in the increased call on academics to conduct seminars and lectures in English.
As a result, non-native English-speaking academics need academic language support. Academic English Services strives to meet this need by offering the following support with respect to academic presentations and speaking skills:
- Developing a speaker-responsible approach that guides the audience (clear structure, optimal use of transitions)
- Learning linguistic devices to make the presentation more dynamic
- Integrating useful phrases for specific presentation parts (like the introduction, results and conclusion) and concrete language functions (like emphasising, qualifying and explaining)
- Tailored training to improve grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation
- Intensive practice with constructive professional feedback
- Editing of presentation slides and lectures
Training is done on a one-to-one or group basis via Skype, FaceTime or Zoom and email. For more details please contact me.
